Board Meeting October 2010

The Meeting was called to order by Supervisor Brandt at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were in attendance.

Motion by Plein, seconded by Wortham to accept the minutes of the September 13th, 2010 Board Meeting and September 28t Special Meeting as presented. Carried – unanimous

Motion by Wortham seconded by Plein to accept the Treasurers report for September, 2010, check #16638 through check #16697, totaling $278,500.09. Carried – unanimous

Motion by Wortham, seconded by Plein to pay all bills presented for payment by the Clerk, check #16698 through check #16724, totaling $13094.13. Carried – unanimous

Crow Wing County Deputy Eric Klang addressed the board and attendees at the meeting regarding his upcoming run for Sherriff. Klang discussed the economic crisis in the area and crime around Crow Wing County. Klang also stressed his focus on budget management and customer service.

Gary Severson approached the board regarding a variance request from the lake setback for Denny Lind on Camp Foley Road. Severson presented drawings of the proposed addition for the boards review. After a brief discussion, the board approved the request and agreed to contact the county regarding their recommendation.

Vic Kreuziger questioned the recent Fire Department Relief Association meeting and the how the deficit came about. The board explained the meeting was to discuss with the auditor and the relief board, how to possibly avoid future deficits and how to fund the relief association shortfall. In addition, the board stated the deficit was due to poor market performance and several large retirement cash outs to members in the previous years.

Randy Bryant requested the board consider going out for bids for recycling and roll off fees with his company. The board agreed to meet with Mr. Bryant to discuss his services and fees at a later date.

The Road and Bridge report was as follows:

  1. Supervisor Brandt reported a joint powers road agreement between Pequot Lakes and the City of Breezy Point has been signed.
  2. The maintenance department has been taking care of road washouts and removing dead trees along the roadway.
  3. The intersection modification on Wabigoniss Shores Road appears to have improved the safety of the intersection and Brandt requested the county look at the change and advise the township if the changes make the area safer and give any further recommendations.
  4. Brandt was recently contacted by an attorney and storage park owners regarding the paving of Storage Park Road. No further action was taken on the request as the board stated at a previous meeting there was no intention of paving the road.
  5. There were no safety incidents.

The Fire Department report was as follows:

  1. There were 8 emergency runs the previous month.
  2. Assistant Chief Stoltman requested the board approve the addition of a fire fighter at Station 2 to fill the current vacancy.
  3. The ISO testing for Station 2 had been completed and the department is awaiting results.
  4. Chief Clasen and Assistant Chief Stoltman attended the State Chiefs conference.
  5. There were no safety incidents.

Motion by Wortham, seconded by Plein, to accept the application for the vacancy at Station 2. Carried – unanimous.

Vic Kreuziger questioned the necessity of Station 2. Supervisor Wortham explained the townships northside residents were entitled to the same coverage the southside residents receive for protection and services and the addition of Station 2 now provides that coverage.

The Park and Recreation report was as follows:

  1. Supervisor Plein reported the water and restrooms at the Park have been blown out and closed for the season.
  2. The split rail fence has been stained and the leaves removed.

The Transfer Station report was as follows:

  1. Supervisor Plein no hazardous materials will be accepted at the station until next spring.
  2. The brush pile has been burned.
  3. The scrap metal will be removed on Wednesday.

Brandt reported Boyd’s Lodge is again under Schweiters management and a rezoning request has been submitted to the county.

Brandt reported on several variance requests presented at the county level and the progress with the erosion control on Big Island.

There being no further business to transact, the meeting adjourned at 8:25 pm.
