The Meeting was called to order by Supervisor Brandt at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. Supervisor Wortham was not in attendance.
Motion by Plein, seconded by Brandt to accept the minutes of the January 10th, 2011 Board Meeting as presented. Carried ñ unanimous
Motion by Plein, seconded by Brandt to accept the Treasurers report for January, 2011, check #16902 through check #16955, totaling $100,163.15 Carried ñ unanimous
Motion by Plein, seconded by Brandt to pay all bills presented for payment by the Clerk, check #16956 through check #16989, totaling $19,304.19 Carried ñ unanimous.
Kevin McCormick from Land Design Solutions addressed the board regarding several variance requests for a property owned by the Baliessis family on Old Whiskey Road. The board agreed to visit the site and make a recommendation to Crow Wing County.
Dave Johnson questioned the proposal to keep the budget steady for the year 2012 and if the board felt that was an adequate levy. The board stated the budget will be set at the annual meeting and further research was being done to see if the current amount was adequate.
Vic Kreuziger requested the board keep in mind the current school referendum taxes and the strain placed on local tax payers.
The Road and Bridge report was as follows:
- Supervisor Brandt reported on snowplowing efforts in the township.
- A road agreement has been reached with Jenkins Township although further research is needed to get accurate mileage of several roads.
- 35 cords of wood were delivered to Big Island by volunteers.
- There were no safety incidents.
Motion by Brandt, seconded by Plein to accept the proposed joint powers road agreement with Jenkins Township. Carried - unanimous
The Fire Department report was as follows:
- There were 6 emergency runs the previous month.
- Last months drill was confined spaces and SCBA search and rescue.
- 8 Fire Fighters were starting 1st responder training this month.
- Mask fit and physicals were conducted on January 12th.
- ISO testing information was sent to Chicago for review and a decision should occur sometime in April.
- An AED was purchased and put into service on the North side.
- Repairs have been needed on the lift pump at Station 2 and the telephone.
- The Ideal Fire Department will be attending the county board meeting on Feb. 22 to talk about the need for the simulcast option for the 800 mega hertz system.
- Last week, Gene Peterson 57 years old, a past member of the Fire Department, past away of a heart attack while at work. The department assisted in the funeral procession with E20 and E11 and active members of the department attended the funeral.
- Clasen requested the department purchase a used 2000 GMC 350 quad cab pick up to replace WS17 with funds from the fire department non-budget account.
- Clasen reported he is working on the 2012 budget.
- The department had two major house fires in the township last month, both which required mutual aid from surrounding departments.
- There were no safety incidents.
Motion by Brandt, seconded by Plein, to approve the purchase of the 2000 GMC 350 at a cost of $10,844.32 from the non-budget fire equipment account.
Vic Kreuziger requested additional information regarding the house fire on the north side. Chief Clasen explained the fire was under investigation by the state fire marshal and no further information was available. Mr. Kreuziger also requested that the written fire department report be included in the agenda package. Chief Clasen felt this was unnecessary as all information on the sheet was reported verbally at the meeting. The written report is meant to benefit the clerk with minutes. The board agreed to discuss the request and try and come to a reasonable solution.
There was nothing new to report for Park and Recreation.
The Transfer Station report was as follows:
- Supervisor Plein reported the new disposal guide have been updated and are now available.
Brandt reported Big Island was applying for an addition grant and the Crow Wing County Planning and Zoning ordinance amendment meeting was set for Feb. 22nd.
The clerk reported the township election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8th from 5pm to 8pm with the Annual meeting to follow. Additional, the March monthly meeting was scheduled for Monday, March 7th at 7pm.
Supervisor Plein presented the annual township newsletter for approval by the board.
